Van Lawn Masters Indoor Championships - 2008
Ed
Bakker of Victoria, above centre, serves for match point to win the final in the men's 50 singles of the 31st Masters Tournament April 4 - 13 at the
Vancouver Lawn Tennis Club. A record number of 321 players competed in
28 categories,
with the women's 45 doubles the most popular category.

his partner, J.J. Mahoney, lost in the semis to doubles specialists and
winners of men's 35 doubles, Michael Hopkinson and
Arne Raabe. George Lea beat Ken McBean, 7-6, 0-6, 7-6
to win the men's 55 singles title. However, he fell short to defending his men's 60
singles title, losing to David Ranney in the finals, 6-4, 6-4.
Ken Dahl,
the 2007 winner of men's 55 singles, skipped this year's
event to play in the U.S. Nationals, where he reached the
quarter-finals of that tournament.

Ed Bakker, the eventual winner of the men's 50 singles. Russ
Hartley, the winner of the event last year had knee surgery and was
side-lined for this tournament.

George Whitfield and his partner, Bruce Fraser, lost in the men's 55
doubles semis to Al Lawry and

Photo 5: Rudy Derton, left, and Lubomir Chobot playing in
the men's 75 singles. Rudy lost in the semis to unseeded Brian Roy, 6-4, 6-4.
Brian later lost to Lubo, the defending champion, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. Lubo teamed up with
Gordon Verge
in the men's 75 doubles,
but lost to Norman Hughes and Walter Toffoli in a close three-set match.
Hughes and Toffoli in turn lost the final to Chuck Underhill and
Howard Lowe. Chuck also won the men's 70 singles.
Photo 6: Patricia McLachlan (left) and Francesca Azim lost in
the semis to Janice Holloway and Pamela Rosenbaum, the eventual winners of women's 55
doubles. Patricia McLachlan later went on to win the women's 60 singles
title.
