Vasek Pospisil at the Australian Open
February 4, 2008 - Vasek Pospisil of Vernon BC, above, made it to his second
Boys' Grand Slam final. Vasek and his Mexican partner Cesar Ramirez lost to Cheng Peng Hsieh and Tsung-Hua Yang of Taiwan in a close match, 6-3, 5-7, 5-10 (third-set super-tiebreaker) in the
Boys' Doubles final at the Australian Open.
Even though the 17-year-old Vasek lost in first round singles to American Bradley Klahn (7-5, 6-4), his performance in the doubles helped his ranking move up from No. 52 to No 31. The ITF junior ranking is a combined singles/doubles ranking to encourage doubles at the junior level and subsequently at pro level.
Vasek is Canada's top junior player and finished 2007 as BC No. 5 ranked player. He is in Calgary this week serving as a practice partner for the Canadian Davis Cup team.
Vasek had a chance to warm up world No. 1 Roger Federer for 30 minutes before Roger's semifinal against Novak Djokovic, an unforgettable experience for him and a memorable moment for his proud father and coach, Milos.
